Most 401(k) record keepers offer an open architecture solution whereby a plan is able to utilize mutual funds or ETFs from multiple fund families; they are not restricted to proprietary funds only. However, in many situations, while a plan is allowed this flexibility, the record keeping fee for the plan may vary depending on the investment options selected. A true open architecture 401(k) record keeper will not vary its fees based on the plan’s fund lineup; its fees are truly independent of investment selection.
