It appears that the main reason the Republican Party backed off the fiscal cliff debate was because they planned on leaning on the debt ceiling and the force of sequester. This may bring the Democrats to the negotiation table to pick and choose which cuts will be made rather than the across the board spending cuts that come with sequestration.
